About Us

Established in September 1997, Hillside Hawks was set up to offer rugby to girls, initially, this was provided as regular training sessions and occasional festivals and friendly matches. We started with a membership of about 15 players (one team).

We got involved with Rochdale Council on delivering the teams for the Greater Manchester Youth Games which lead to small (2 schools) schools programme to recruit new players for the GMYG.
In 1998/9 a Girls League was established which meant regular fixtures, we entered two teams, U15 & U16 and we won both leagues

In 1999/2000 again we entered two teams at U14 & U16, the U14's was a new team again recruited through a schools programme
We have invested sum's of money via lottery Awards for All to deliver a schools programme, which has involved 17 primary schools and 5
High schools. We have provided equipment and teacher training, all of this has created an increase in demand at club level.
This season we have 4 youth teams in the league competiton (u16, u15, u14 & u13) with the occasional freindly match at u12. With a membership of 60 youth players we have a solid foundation for the future.

In 2002 we started our first women's team based on u16's becoming too old to play youth rugby and asking some older youth players to start playing again. In our first season we came runner up and in the second year we won the 1st Division and now play in the premiership. With an average of 30 women registered with us and 60 girls we think we are the largest female club in the country (league or union)

We have over the years had several players who have represented the North West, currently we have 17 youth players representing the North West at various age groups, 6 England U21's and 2 Great Britain players
